South Africa prepares to raise taxes on imported poultry meat
Following the announcement made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his State of the Nation address on 13 February, the South African government will soon apply an increased import tax on imported poultry meat, a measure designed to protect the local industry from foreign competition (521,500 tonnes imported in 2018). The new import tariff is expected to be communicated within the next two weeks and could be implemented as of 1 April. As a reminder, the customs duties currently applied are 12% and 37% respectively on boneless and bone-in poultry imports.
