U.S. Becomes World’s Second Largest Importer of Kenyan Goods After Uganda
This was reported today by Kenya’s Business Daily Africa, reporting that exports to the United States for the year 2019 had increased at the fastest rate in five years, citing provisional trade data collected by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). According to the financial institution, income from goods ordered by the world’s largest economy (mainly textiles and clothing) would have increased by 9.53% to 51.85 billion Kenyan shillings ($512 million), compared to KES 63.65 billion ($628 million) for Uganda. The announcement comes as the US and Kenya have announced their intention to negotiate a historic bilateral free trade agreement that would replace the current Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) governing economic and trade relations between Washington and several African countries.
