Zambia Glencore may soon resume operations of the Mopani site
Closed since April 7 due to poor profitability, the Zambian mining site of Mopani, owned by Swiss commodities giant Glencore, could soon restart operations. The announcement has been made by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mines, Barnaby Mulenga, who said that he has received guarantees from the Swiss group to continue the operation of its copper mining subsidiary, Mopani Copper Mines. Earlier, on 14 April, the Lusaka authorities had temporarily detained the mine manager on the grounds that the mining group had failed to notify the State of its decision to suspend operations.
